Job Title: Technical Product Owner – Payments
Job Type: Contract
Duration: 6 - 9 months
Location: NC
Job Description:

Department: Product / Engineering Reports to Director of Product / VP of Engineering

Seeking a highly analytical and technical Product Owner to lead the execution, scaling, and modernization of our Payments Platform. In this role, you will bridge the gap between business strategy and deep technical execution. You will own the technical product roadmap for core payment capabilities—including pay-in/pay-out orchestration, ledgering, compliance, and third-party processor integrations (e.g., Stripe, Adyen, FedNow, or traditional clearing networks). The ideal candidate speaks fluent "API," understands the architectural nuances of high-throughput transactional systems, and can ruthlessly prioritize a technical backlog to deliver secure, resilient, and scalable payment experiences.

Key Responsibilities Vision & Execution:

Translate high-level payment business strategies into detailed technical requirements, epics, user stories, and system architecture diagrams.

Backlog & Sprint Management. Own, prioritize, and maintain the engineering backlog. Lead sprint planning, refinement sessions, and daily standups as the embedded PO for a dedicated payments engineering team.

API & Integration Ownership:

Define and document technical specifications for internal APIs and external payment gateway/processor integrations. Ensure clean, scalable API contracts.

Core Payments Domain Leadership: Serve as the subject matter expert on payment flows (authorization, capture, settlement, refunds), ledger balances, reconciliation, fraud prevention, and local/international payment rails. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Core Product Managers, Security, Compliance, Finance/Accounting, and Engineering leadership to align technical dependencies. Compliance & Security: Ensure the payments platform adheres to strict industry standards, including PCI-DSS, KYC/AML regulations, and regional compliance mandates.

Required Technical Skills & Qualifications Experience:

3–5+ years of experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager, or Systems Analyst, with at least 2 years dedicated specifically to Payments Infrastructure or Fintech. Technical Architecture: Strong understanding of microservices architecture, REST/GraphQL APIs, webhooks, and database transaction management (ACID compliance). Payment Rails Expertise: Deep knowledge of modern and traditional payment systems (e.g., Credit/Debit card processing, ACH, SEPA, Real-Time Payments/RTP, Open Banking). Agile Proficiency: Master of Agile/Scrum methodologies, with extensive experience using Jira, Confluence, or similar product management tools.

Data & Analytics:

Proficient in SQL for querying transaction logs and analyzing system performance/success rates. Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker) is a plus. Core Competencies (The "Soft" Skills) Translational Skills: The rare ability to explain complex payment orchestration logic to business stakeholder and corporate finance teams, while equally able to debate technical edge cases with Principal Engineers.

Problem-Solving:

A knack for uncovering the root cause of transactional failures, settlement discrepancies, or API latencies. Prioritization: Ability to balance technical debt, security patches, and infrastructure scaling with incoming revenue-generating business features.
